Ebay - Forum Etiquette

#1 Post by D-Rider » Sat Dec 05, 2009 12:03 pm

For some time I've been thinking that we need to establish some forum etiquette over Ebay.

I'm sure that there are others like me that on a number of occasions have been quietly stalking things for days on ebay - waiting for a last minute snipe - only to find that some "helpful" soul has posted it up for the world to see.

I'm sure there are others that will have been very grateful that the item they are after has been brought to their attention by that same "helpful" soul.

I'm proposing a number of options for us to vote on:
  • 1) A complete ban on posting up about things for sale on ebay (until the auction is over)

    2) A ban on posting up about Auction Items but "Buy It Now" and "Classified Sale" items can be freely posted

    3) Open season - post what you like.
My preference is 2 - it doesn't affect the snipers waiting for the auction to enter it's final seconds and allows us to tell people of things that they can buy there and then.
With any of these things we are still at liberty to PM people that we know to have a specific interest in something.

If we opt for options 1 or 2, I'll enforce it by zapping anything posted that breaks the agreed code of conduct.
(BTW - this will only applies to the ApriliaRidersite as Aprilia community powers do not extend to the wider forum)

If I've missed an important option, let me know and I'll add it to the list.

What do you think?

if i find somthing of interest , even though i dont want it i would like to post it up for others to get a chance of getting it , but i must admit if i want it i try to keep it secret , but it is the internet and thousands of folk will be looking at it , not just from this site ,

but if the item is realy needed by a fellow forum member to get them back on the road, like me looking for a break lever pedel , i would like to think that you would give me a chance to win it

Erhaps a declare an interest oprion for need only?

Ie not bling items?

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Yes - absolutely - if you need something, post up that you need it and then anyone who spots one can PM you - for some of us the fact that you post up that you need something means that we'd not only PM you but also not bid ourselves on something that might just "come in useful".

I accept that a lot of people scan ebay anyway but I see no point in advertising things on a forum like this that will push the price up for any of us that are actively after specific items.

Oh BTW I've no objection if forum members post up to say they've stuck something on ebay - I guess the object is to help "us" get things we need more cheaply and get what we can when we sell things (though it would be nice to think that many would give first option at a "reasonable price" to fellow forum members.

Its an auction. Highest bidder wins.. If i want it bad I am going to bid on it to my max amount.

Also, Most of the time we all know about it 'item' anyway.

Highest bidder wins always. You know what you want to pay and if someone else wants it, you go to your limit. If you lose then thats just tuff, sorry. Try again another day. I still need a speed sensor and they keep selling for more than i am prepared to pay. When it gets nearer riding seaon i may pay more, but for now i am not going over my amount.

We're a friendly bunch, and understandably we're going to pass on useful info to others on items of high interest. The only person to lose out is the one lying in wait, thinking they're the only one who knows about the auction, but odds are they're not alone, not just forum members but other falco owners to.

Tbh I think this is truly one of the most ridiculous suggestions ever, forum ettiquete is about not being malicious towards others, not about stopping people giving others a head's up

like Paddy said, you want it, put a good bid on it, if you're tight then odds are someone else will won, and just as likely not as a result of a forum post

I'm with paddy and Firestarter on this. ebay isn't a private auction. After all, when it comes to selling something, we all want as many watchers, and hopefully, bidders as we can get.

It's fine the forum has spoken, please post auction items as you feel fit.

That was the purpose of the poll, to find the view of the forum - there was no ridiculous suggestion - just 3 different options to see what the forum thought and establish once and for all how to play this issue.
I know that I'm not the only one on this and other forums to prefer the middle option - but this was not an attempt to foist that view on anyone - just to include it within the options for discussion. As usual, I'm more than happy to follow the majority view.

I'll close the poll as the result is clear.
